Mastering Diy Pool Cleaning: Tips For An Effective Clean

Before we hand over the pool to the pros, let’s try and handle it ourselves with the tips in the table below

AreaDetails
Thorough inspectionConduct a visual and audio inspection of your pool and equipment. Check for any irregularities or unusual sounds, such as grinding, screeching, gurgling, hissing, whistling, loud suction, or rattling that may indicate a problem.
Also, ensure the chemical readings of the pool water are accurate and turn off any equipment– (pool pump, pool filter, and pool heater– before proceeding with the cleaning tasks.
Filter and pump basket cleaningClean the filter and pump basket regularly. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model to do it correctly. Typically, this involves removing the pump lid and spraying debris from the basket using a hose.
Tile cleaningUse a tile brush and pool tile soap to scrub the waterline tiles and grout. This simple step will remove any unsightly buildup, leaving your pool sparkling and inviting.
Skimming the surfaceUse nets to skim the pool’s surface. Move slowly to collect leaves, pollen, and other debris.
Efficient skimmer basket managementClear the skimmer basket regularly to eliminate accumulated debris.
Thorough pool floor vacuumingConnect the vacuum hose and head to the skimmer basket. You can also follow your pool’s specific instructions for proper setup. Run the vacuum along the pool floor, just like you would when vacuuming your home’s carpet.
Wall-scrubbingBrush the pool walls diligently to avoid algae and dirt. Start with the shallow end and work towards the deep end for a complete clean. This labor-intensive task is essential for maintaining a clean pool.
Optimal circulation system adjustmentBackwash or adjust the pool’s circulation system as the manufacturer recommends. This step ensures proper water flow and efficient filtration, maintaining your pool’s clarity.
Skim againDebris might resurface during the cleaning process. Skim again using leaf and pollen nets to leave your pool surface spotless.
Maintain clean and safe waterAdd chlorine tablets and adjust pH because balanced water chemistry is crucial for safe and enjoyable swimming.

How to Clean Your Pool Line?

I know dealing with a stubborn light brown stain above the pool waterline is frustrating. But no need to stress – I’ve got it covered! I have found three different methods to clean the pool liner.

Bleach Cleaner

  1. Look for dark spots on the pool liner due to bacteria or fungus.
  2. Prepare the bleach cleaner; mix one part chlorine bleach with one part water in a container.
  3. Using a spray bottle or small garden sprayer, apply the bleach cleaner directly to the stains on the liner.
  4. Let the bleach cleaner dry to work on the stains.
  5. Wipe off the extra bleach cleaner after removing the stains.
  6. Rinse the pool liner thoroughly with water to ensure no bleach is left on the liner.

Check out the video below for a demonstration of these steps:

Stain Remover

  1. Start by identifying the cause of the stain. It could be due to certain suntan lotions swimmers use, which leave behind an oily or tar-like residue on the pool liner.
  2. Visit your local swimming pool center and get a water sample tested. Check for metals or other potential causes. They might recommend a product to eliminate metals from the water.
  3. Test the recommended anti-metal stain remover. Follow the instructions and apply it to the stain. This should help reduce the intensity of the stain.
  4. Use tar and oiler stain remover as an alternative if the anti-metal stain remover does not work. The pool liner cleaner will tackle the stains effectively and keep your liner looking natural.
  5. Be patient and persistent. Stains may remain after a single cleaning cycle. Use the products repeatedly during pool closure for a more thorough cleaning.

The YouTube channel Life in France and Philipino has produced a helpful video on how to use the stain remover method:

Maintain the Pool Liner

Here are some tips you can follow to maintain the pool liner:

  • Use a well-fitted pool cover that seals tightly at the edges to prevent dirt and debris from entering the pool. This will keep the pool clean and also inhibit stain formation. But keep a regular check by lifting the pool cover every few weeks.
  • Test your pool’s alkalinity, calcium hardness, pH, and chlorine levels once a week.
  • Aim to keep the pH between 7.4-7.8 and calcium hardness between 200-250ppm. For an incredible swimming experience, don’t let the alkalinity rise beyond 150 ppm.
  • Keep the chlorine levels between 1-3 ppm if you have a non-heated pool and 2-4 ppm if you own a heated pool. Usually, pools do not get much use in winter, so maintain the chemical balance accordingly.
  • Clean your pool at least once a week by skimming the surface, vacuuming, and brushing the liner.
  • If you use the pool regularly, you should call professional pool cleaning teams at least once a year.

Conclusion

Effective pool maintenance is paramount to keeping your backyard pool in optimum condition. It improves the water clarity and removes any unsightly stains and algae. You can call the pros to handle the situation or use the DIY steps to shower love on your pool. Robotic cleaners will help you get the best results. Finally, don’t forget to clean the pool liner as well!
