A soft blower hum, a click before ignition, a brief burner whoosh, and light duct popping as metal warms can be normal. A new loud bang at the furnace, grinding or scraping, persistent electrical buzzing, repeated ignition clicking, or any noise accompanied by a gas odor, soot, smoke, sparking, a CO alarm, or a tripped breaker requires shutdown and professional service.
The sound alone cannot prove which part failed. Its location, timing, duration, and related symptoms matter. Record a short video from a safe distance, note whether the noise occurs before ignition, during blower operation, or at shutdown, and give that information to the technician. Do not remove furnace panels to get a closer recording.
